Canadian artist Miriam Dion turns something so prosaic as the first bands of daily newspapers, in the magic patterned canvas, using only a sharp blade and a rich imagination.
Miriam Dion is a student of the Department of Fine Arts and Information Design of the University of Quebec. Working with the old newspaper releases "Financial Times", "The International Herald Tribune" and "Le Devoir", it cuts out intricate paper, resembling ancient lace, patterns. Bonded in the canvas capable of covering a whole wall, the pages of newspapers become similar to samples of complex designer textiles.

The artist often uses illustrations, photographs, modular mesh and color schemes of turns as part of its compositions. Vegetable and geometric motifs, waves, spirals and ornaments in combination with newspaper illustrations create completely new images, dynamic and elegant.

Miriam willingly admit that it buys newspapers and magazines mainly because of the pictures. All of her works are made manually, without using the plotter. Not counting the pencils and the liners, which she makes the sketch, the only instrument of the artist is the X-ACTO model knife.

Dion argues that turning ordinary newspaper turns into works of art, she "finds a new application of the printed press, which is now on the verge of extinction." The fragility of its paper lace symbolically reflects the vulnerable position of the traditional "printed" journalism.
