In 1772, the Englishman John Whitehörst invented and built a "pulsating engine", a prototype of hydraulic Taran, and three years later published his description. The Whiteheurst device was manually controlled. The first automatic hydrothedral pump invented the famous Frenchman Joseph Michel Mongolfier together with Ami Argan (A. Argand) in 1796. In 1797, with the help of his friend Matthew Bowlton, Mongolfier received a British patent for his invention. In 1816, the sons of Mongolfier patented the final version of this pump.

In the US, the hydrothedral pump was first patented Serny (J. Cerneau) and Hallet (S.S. Hallet) in 1809. In 1834, American Strawbridge began production of hydrotair pumps.

In 1930, Professor S. D. Chistopolsky in the work of the "Hydraulic Taran" published a method of theoretical calculation of such devices based on the theory of hydraulic strike created by Professor N. E. Zhukovsky in 1897-1898.
